SSG Stephen John Sutherland was born November 7, 1972 in Woodbury, NJ. After graduating from high school and having a series of jobs that he found unfulfilling, he enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1998 and was stationed at Fort Carson, CO for his first assignment where he met his wife. The family next moved to Fort Wainwright, AK when Stephen deployed to Iraq assigned to the 4th Squadron, 14th Cavalry Regiment, 172nd Stryker Brigade Combat Team.
Stephen was active in his church youth group, the Boy Scouts and was a member of the Knights of Columbus. He was a skilled electrical and plumbing handyman.
Stephen was killed November 12, 2005 while on patrol in Iraq. He is survived by his wife, Maria, and children. We were honored to meet Maria in 2018 at our Survivors of Heroes Retreat.
